Musings on Entropy

A room left uncleaned, even when unused, will accumulate dirt. Hinges will rust and doors would decay.

The default for anything and everything is regression, not stagnation.

Yes, I'm dressing up my words, you wouldn't take me serious otherwise.

The point I'm making is everything tends towards chaos (entropy).

If you aren't taking active steps to achieve your desired outcome, you won't remain where you are. Instead, you will descend into entropy.

Let's bring it home.

When you aren't engaging in a productive activity, say: Learning, working or teaching, you will not sit and stare at a wall. Unless you're a psychopath…ahem.

You will pick up your phone, click on TikTok, play video games or text mindlessly to begin the disastrous cycle of feeding your brain with cheap dopamine.

Disclaimer: I'm not writing this from a high-horse position. I'm as prone to doom-scrolling as the next guy but I'm actively trying to bring focus into my life. Hence my writing, as much a letter to myself as to you.

I hope you see where I'm going with this —

If you aren't creating, you're consuming.

Personally, the thought of it brings a feeling of discomfort.

It feels good at first, entertaining myself, but as the minutes or hours go by, I get physically uncomfortable and when I finally drop my phone, my brain is flooded with a fog of negativity.

On the other hand, when I engage in a spiritual activity, work on a design project, or write, a sense of satisfaction floods my brain.

I'm sure you've experienced this after doing something you enjoy. You know both the fog of entropy, and the clarity of order.

If you aren't building something meaningful, you will descend into entropy.

Imagine your life as a precise and high functioning machine.

It needs intentional maintenance.

I hope this letter serves as a subtle reminder to oil your machine.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it — take the reins of your life and guide it towards order, day by day.
